The Cameron Highlands (or Cameron’s high land) are North of Kuala Lumpur, a 3/4 hours by bus, in the Malayan region of Pahang. They were for a long time the preferred holiday destination of the English colonists, who found some relief to the sweltering heat of the tropical climate of Malaysia here. The British presence is very evident in the architecture of the typically colonial zone. Precisely thanks to its temperate climate, the Cameron Highlands have become the ideal place for planting tea and strawberries, the two main crops in the area. Tea plantations give the landscape a very special appearance, characterized by a thousand shades of green, contrasting with the blue of the sky. But the Cameron Highlands are not only plantations of tea and strawberries.
Among its attractions is the mossy forest, an ancient jungle thousands and thousands of years, on which you can do excursions of one or more days, discovering the richness of its flora and its fauna. Both in the Centre of Tanah Rata, the main village of the area, as in most hotels and hostels of the Cameron Highlands, it is possible to hire tours to the plantations or the jungle or even a combination of the two. Excursions tend to end up in the factory of tea Bho, the most famous of Malaysia, in which you can observe the various phases of the elaboration of the leaves and buy different types of tea. It is also possible to make excursions of trekking without Guide, although it is recommended to go well prepared, because some of them may take several hours. Another possibility is to visit one of the centers of butterflies, in which dozens of them in a defined area, in an effort to avoid total extinction are preserved.
Visits to the villages of the orang asli are also organized, the natives of the area, which in some cases are still living according to tradition manda, what hunt and gather in the jungle. Street markets are other attractions of the Cameron Highlands and they can test and buy the products of these lands: fruits and vegetables, flowers and famous honey of the Highlands.
