His career as a musician began in 1991 to compose music for television advertisements in India. In 1992 he composed the songs in the film Red, directed by Mani Ratnam. In his film debut, allowed him to get the prize “Rajat Kamal award” for best music director at the National Film Awards. His first album “Red” with the songs of that film, has been listed by TIME magazine as one the 10 best songs for movie musicals of all time. His music has references to classical composers, romantic, Carnatic music, and film composers like KV Mahadevan and Vishwanathan, Ramamoorthy. Rahman has successfully collaborated with other composers for films such as Mani Ratnam on ten films until 2006, or S. Shankar in the films “Gentleman” and “Kadhal”, “Indian”, “Jeans”, “Mudhalvan”, “Nayak”, “Boys” and “Sivaji”. ARRahman has worked in over 100 films and is still active working on music for Hollywood movies. In 2008 has worked on four films, “Jodhaa Akbar”, “Janne tu ya jaane na”, “Yuvraaj” and “Ghajini.
